Welcome to the Walter Family website!

This website came about as a final class project to build a database-driven website with dynamically-loading content (that is a mouthful and more coding than I ever thought I could comprehend, even for a simple site!). I got the idea to create a family website based on conversations with my father about family history and genealogy. The content on this site is a synopsis of Richard J. Walter's genealogy research in the 1960s and 70s (long before you could Google information in a matter of seconds). It involved researching the National Archives, library and church records, letter writing, driving to Pennsylvania and meeting distant relatives who knew some facts to share — back when it was done by hand and on foot. Ironically, the missing link was not filled in until the age of the internet: ships logs of our first ancestors who immigrated to the U.S. in the 1700s from Germany. All of this research would not have been possible without Richard's findings, writings and collected images.

To know where one comes from, their family history and lineage, and to pay homage to those who paved the way for our generation and those to come — to share this information with other family members and interested parties is my goal. Many thanks to Richard, for getting all of the content together so quickly and to Kelsey Walter-Johnson for helping out with the scanning of images.

So the next time someone asks you where your family is from or what your lineage is &mdash you can answer quite accurately! In fact, I think a trip to the "Motherland" is in order... (okay, just looking for an excuse to travel!). Anyway, I hope you enjoy exploring this site and if you have any suggestions, corrections, or want to add images to the gallery page please send a message via the contact page.
